Texas has more counties than any other state by a margin of 95. Why that happened, and why the national total is not a settled number.
Three things a national county map does not show
- Not every entity is a county. Louisiana has parishes, Alaska has boroughs and census areas, Connecticut has planning regions, and 40 independent cities belong to no county at all. Nine legal types in total.
- 35 of them have no county government. Connecticut and Rhode Island abolished theirs, Massachusetts abolished most of its, and Alaska's census areas never had one. The full list.
- The boundaries move. Connecticut's changed in 2022, three Alaska entities changed shape in 2013 while keeping their identifiers, and counties are occasionally renamed, which usually forces a new FIPS code. Why codes change.
