Terms of use

Short version: take the data, check it against the source before anything important depends on it, and do not use our maps for anything legal or navigational.

Using the content

The statistics on this site come from public-domain US federal datasets and from Wikidata under CC0. We add no restriction of our own. You may reproduce, republish, analyse and build on the figures freely, commercially or otherwise.

The map files offered for download are derived from Census Bureau cartographic boundary files and carry the same position: free to use. Attribution to County Maps US is appreciated, not required. Attribution to the US Census Bureau as the origin of the underlying data is the part that matters, and each page names the specific product.

Page layout, styling, written explainer articles and the code that generates this site are our own work and are not part of that grant.

Accuracy, honestly stated

We take accuracy seriously and the site is built around it: every figure names its source and vintage, missing data is shown as missing rather than guessed, and computed figures are labelled as computed. The methodology page documents all of it.

That is not the same as a guarantee. Source data contains errors, our processing can introduce errors, and figures go out of date between refreshes. If a number here matters to a decision, check it against the source we name. Tell us if it is wrong and we will fix it.

What the maps are not for

The boundaries here are simplified for display. Every state's geometry is generalised so no point moves more than about half a pixel at the size it is drawn, which makes it accurate to look at and unsuitable for measurement.

Specifically, do not use these maps or files for:

  • Determining a legal or jurisdictional boundary.
  • Property, parcel or survey work of any kind.
  • Navigation.
  • Emergency response or dispatch.
  • Anything where the exact position of a line matters.

For any of those, use the Census Bureau's TIGER/Line files or the relevant county's own GIS department, both of which publish unsimplified geometry.

Not affiliated with any government

County Maps US is an independent site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or certified by the United States Census Bureau, any other federal agency, any state, or any of the 3,144 counties it covers. Where a page links to an official county website, that link is provided for convenience and implies no relationship in either direction.

No advice

Nothing here is legal, financial, investment, tax or relocation advice. Population, income and housing statistics describe places in aggregate. They do not constitute a recommendation about where to live, invest or do business.

Liability

This site is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. We are not liable for loss arising from use of the content, and given that everything here is freely available public data republished at no charge, that limitation is the whole of the bargain.
