Privacy

The short version

County Maps US does not ask for personal information, does not set tracking cookies, and does not build a profile of you. Every page is a static file. There is no server-side application that could store anything about a visit even if we wanted it to.

What is stored in your browser

One thing, and only if you use it. If you switch the site between light and dark appearance, the choice is saved in your browser's local storage under the key theme. It never leaves your device and it is not sent to us. Clearing your browser's site data removes it, and the site falls back to following your operating system's appearance setting.

No other local storage, no session storage, and no cookies of any kind are set by this site.

Server logs

The site is served by a content delivery network, which keeps standard technical logs for delivery and abuse prevention: the requested URL, a timestamp, an approximate location derived from the network address, and the browser's self-reported user agent. We do not combine these into user profiles and do not use them for advertising.

Analytics

If we add analytics, it will be a measurement tool that does not use cookies and does not track individuals across sites, and this page will say which one before it is switched on. It will never be a product that follows readers around the web.

Third parties

Fonts are self-hosted. Map geometry is served from our own domain. There is no advertising network, no embedded video, no social widget, no comment system and no third-party JavaScript on any page. Loading a page contacts this site and nothing else.

The satellite view is the one exception

County pages, state pages and the national map page carry a satellite view, and it is the only thing anywhere on this site that contacts another server. When you scroll far enough down the page to reach it, your browser requests one aerial photograph frombasemap.nationalmap.gov, run by the United States Geological Survey.

That request carries what any web request carries: your network address, your user agent, and the coordinates of the area shown. It reaches the USGS, not us, and is covered by their policies rather than ours. We receive nothing back from it, set no cookie because of it, and cannot tell whether it happened.

It is loaded lazily, which is a technical detail with a privacy consequence worth stating plainly: if you read the top of a page and leave, or never scroll as far as the satellite section, the image is never requested and no connection to the USGS is ever opened. Only reaching that part of the page triggers it. Everything else on the page, including the boundary outline drawn over the photograph, is served from this domain.

We chose a federal public-domain imagery service for this specifically: it needs no account, no API key, and carries no advertising identity. A commercial basemap would have meant embedding a tracker to show you a picture.

Data about places, not people

Everything published here describes geography and aggregate statistics for areas, from public federal datasets. The Census Bureau suppresses figures that could identify individuals before publishing them, and where a figure is suppressed we show that it is suppressed rather than trying to estimate around it. There is no personal data in the dataset and none could be derived from it.

Children

The site collects nothing from anyone, of any age. It is used by students, which is one reason it collects nothing.
