What the map does not say

The counties of Hawaii are nowhere near the same size. Hawaii County covers 4,028 sq mi of land, 336 times the 12.0 sq mi of Kalawao County. People are spread even less evenly: Honolulu County packs 1,646 per sq mi while Kalawao County holds 6.8 per sq mi.

They were not drawn in one sitting either. Maui County dates to 1905, and the boundaries were still being redrawn when Honolulu County was organised in 1907, 2 years later. Founding years come from Wikidata and are worth checking against the county's own history before citing.
